Welcome to Gasparilla Island

Gasparilla Island is synonymous with Boca Grande. Technically, Boca Grande is only the very small heart of the island encompassing the Historic District. Most visitors refer to the entire island as Boca Grande, and that’s just fine with us.

The barrier island of Gasparilla is located on the Southwest coast of Florida, between Sarasota and Ft.Myers. There are no skyscrapers here. The tallest that building code allows is 39 feet. There are no traffic lights. The island is accessible only by one toll bridge at the north end. This swing bridge is very unique, and one of only 9 in Florida. The Gulf of Mexico and white sand beaches lining the western shore are dotted with sharks teeth and seashells. The mangrove shoreline on the eastern Charlotte Harbor side provides great fishing opportunities.

Boca Grande is an inspiration to many, and proof of that lies within several island art galleries and fabulous culinary experiences offered in the downtown area.  Those who vacation here to enjoy the beach, boutiques, boating, kayaking andnature will fall in love and become residents of Boca Grande.  We boast some of the best fishing in the world, in over 750,000 acres of marine estuary and the deepest natural port in Florida.  Tarpon or Silver King are the area’s main attraction for anglers. These shiny silver fish have been known to weigh as much as 300 pounds and measure over 6 feet long.

Boca Grande remains fairly quiet in the summer months with only about 700-800 people. Alternately, there is a bustling seasonal crowd of maybe 5,000. There are approximately 1,200 residential properties on the island. Unique to Boca Grande, you will find the 5th generation of a native fishing family living alongside a business magnate, billionaire vacationer, or retiree.  The affluent appreciate the quiet, island lifestyle of Boca Grande that comes without the hoopla of other popular vacation destinations.

CSX Railroad Company once owned a major part of the island, and our bike path is built over the old railroad bed. This path is used every day by joggers, rollerbladers, golf carts, bicyclists, and more. The old railroad depot building still stands (over 100 years old) and is now filled with shops, offices, and a restaurant.

For our full-time residents with children, there is a private island school in the downtown area. Boca Grande is built around a strong community. The Community Center offers a space to gather and many events throughout the year. Downtown Boca Grande includes its own US Post Office. The Post Office is a central meeting place for many, essential because there is no street delivery of mail.  You won't find a gas station either.

Gasparilla Island does have its own fire department and police sub station. Several street parties are held annually to celebrate tarpon season or holiday festivities. Typically these include food, music, dancing and a chance to get to know your neighbors.

Gasparilla Island is split between Charlotte and Lee County. The preferred method of island travel is by golf cart. Golf carts are everywhere! There are hotels and grocery stores, and one outstanding golf course that occupies its very own small island. State parks and beaches line the western side and south end of Gasparilla Island. The lighthouse (built in 1890) is still actively guiding ships to the Harbor.
